goes back more than 500 years. This new band was set up by four
legendary Bolivian musicians, all ex-founding members of the group
Rumillajta, first recorded by TUMI in 1984. Their music is a combination
of original compositions and arrangements from all over Latin America.
The musicians are: Edgar Villarroel, Adrian Villanueva, Juan Carlos
Cordero and Saul Callejas with Fernando Jiménez and Windsor Chacón

meaning 'City of Stone' in Quechua (one of the most widely spoken
languages in the Andean region) were formed in 1979 by five excellent
Bolivian musicians including the famous singer Edgar Villarroel
(from Inti Raymi, Mallku de los Andes, Roberto Pla and his Latin
Ensemble and Los K'jarkas). Rumillajta were one of the first ever
Andean bands to record for an international record label thus gaining

WASICHAKUY
Pan pipes,
charangos, ancient traditional instrumentation
|
Wasichakuy,
the Quechua title of their second album, is pivotal in understanding
the significance of the music. It's meaning is an intentional double
entendre which means to build your own house and a circle of light
surrounding the sun or the moon; a sort of aura. A riveting experience
from these five virtuosi - in one instance primeval abstract sounds
join elusive ambient harmonies. Then joyful and subtle melodies
submerge the listener into an atmosphere of Inca rituals, celebration
and meditation.

and represented Bolivia at Expo 92. Their gold disc sellin g albums
have gained them fans throughout the world tantalised by their captivating
up-tempo Andean sound. This is the real Andean dance music - rootsy
and catchy yet always sonically powerful. Featuring Edwin Rowert
