Eliades Ochoa was born on the 22nd June, 1946 in Songo la Maya, Santiago de Cuba into a musical family of singing and Tres (Cuban guitar) playing. Growing up on a farm with a musical upbringing, he began to play the guitar at six years old and since then has never forgotten his rural musical roots. In 1963, Eliades was employed as a professional musician for the Santiago radio station, dedicated to Cuban farmers. It was during this time that Trinchera Agraria was formed with the help of Raul Valvalru and later on involving Eliades' sister, Maria. After leaving the Santiago radio station he went on to start the Quinteto de la Trova and then Quinteto Oriente. During this time Eliades became a renowned and experienced musician with his distinctive instrument by adding two extra strings, D and G to the Tres, creating a unique harmonic-guitar.

In 1969, Eliades joined Septeto Ticico Oriental and a year later was officially established and accepted in the Casa de Trova to continue as a regular appearance. During the year 1978, Eliades was invited to join a Cuban Folk group, Cuarteto Patria by Co-founder, Francisco Cobas La O (Pancho Cobas). Before accepting this position, Eliades made it clear that he wanted to introduce new musical elements into the repertoire. Fortunately, the group approved and he became the new lead singer and director. Eliades initiated 'son', 'trova' and 'son montuno' as the new musical foundation for the group's style. He boosted the percussion and later on introduced brass to the repertoire producing a fresh-new feel. Cuarteto Patria toured internationally and recorded two albums for the Mexican Corason Discos label, A Una Coqueta and Se Saltó un León which were promoted across Europe to gain more recognition.

In 1986, Eliades and veteran singer, Compay Segundo recorded the album Chanchaneando which highlighted the famous original song, Chan Chan (by Compay). Together they toured the Dominican Republic and Guadeloup in 1989 and played at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folk life in the US.

Buena Vista Social Club Project "It was spring 1995 and during one of my regular trips to Cuba in an old noisy Russian plane, I coincidently sat next to a fellow traveller, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, ex- director of Cuban band Sierra Maestra. During the long flight we chatted about everything including the reason for his return to Havana which was to form a new band of retired musicians and name them Afro-Cuban All Stars. I remember it so clearly" says Mo Fini of Tumi Music Owner/ Director.

In 1996 Nick Gold (director of World Circuit) and Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba to record a CD using musicians from Mali and Cuba. After a while, it soon became apparent that no visa was being issued to the musicians from Mali. This meant that musicians from recently formed band, Afro-Cuban All Stars had to record. The end result, however, was truly spectacular as the Grammy winning 'Buena Vista Social Club' was born. One of the youngest musicians on this recording was Eliades Ochoa with his distinctive guitar playing and vocals.

The Buena Vista social Club became commercially so important that even today after 20 years, the band still tours around the world with the same name even though the only remaining vocalists of the project are Omara Portoundo and Eliades Ochoa.

After the success of the Buena Vista, all members independently were signed to different music labels and produced many new recordings.

Eliades has recorded 8 albums with Cuarteto Patria including Estoy Como Nunca (2002), Llega El Cuarteto Patria (2002), Tribute to the Cuarteto Patria (2000) nominated for a grammy, Eliades Ochoa Y El Cuarteto Patria (2000), Sublime Illusion (1999) featuring Ry Cooder, David Helgado of 'Los Lobos' and harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite and also nominated for a grammy, A Una Coqueta (1993), Lion is Loose (1996) and CubAfrica with Maun Dibango (1998).

He also recorded six solo albums: Chanchaneando (2000), Cuidadito Compay Gallo (2001), Son De Oriente (2001), Son De Santiago (2003), Ochoa Y Segundo (2003), Se Soltó un León (2006) and La collección cubana: Eliades Ochoa ? 2006 Compilation. In 2010

Eliades recorded an album with several Cuban and Malian musicians including Toumani Diabaté, called AfroCubism taking inspiration from the first Cuban-African album. In 2012 his album Un bolero para ti once again won the Latin Grammy for the Best Tropical Album of the Year award. In October 2015, Eliades and Omara Portuendo were received in the white house by President Obama and performed under the brand name, Buena Vista Social Club as the last two remaining vocalists form the original project. During 2015, Eliades Ochoa joined his sister Maria to record the album "Guajira mas Guajira". He says in his own words, "This is the most important project of my life!".

During the same year, Eliades joined with the master trovadour, Alejandero Almenares, as a duo to record Dos Gigantes de musica Cuban, also with Tumi Music label, which is due to be released during the latter part of 2018

Eliades Ochoa Bustamante nació el 22 de junio 1946 en Alto Songo, Oriente, Cuba.

Creció en un ambiente campesino, en el seno de una familia con tradición en el canto, la ejecución del tres y la guitarra, entorno que favoreció su formación musical, pues comenzó a tocar la guitarra a los seis años, y nunca ha olvidado sus raíces musicales rurales.

En 1963, trabaja como músico profesional en CMKC, emisora de radio de Santiago de Cuba. Fue durante este tiempo que se trasmite el programa campesino Trinchera Agraria, y allí Eliades interpreta sones, guarachas y guajiras. Más tarde se integra su hermana María.

Después de salir de la estación de radio pasó a formar el Quinteto de la Trova y luego Quinteto Oriente. Durante este tiempo transforma su guitarra al adicionarle otra cuerda a la tercera cuerda, obteniendo un sonido peculiar.

En 1969, se unió al Septeto Típico Oriental, y un año después se estableció oficialmente en la Casa de la Trova.

Durante el año 1978, Eliades fue invitado a unirse al Cuarteto Patria, fundado por Francisco Cobas La O (Pancho Cobas), convirtiéndose en cantante y director. En esta agrupación enriquece el repertorio, caracterizando el estilo del grupo con el Son, la Trova y el Son Montuno.

Con el Cuarteto Patria realiza giras internacionales, y graba dos discos con el sello CoraSon de México, A una coqueta y Se soltó el león, que fueron promovidos a través de Europa para ganar más reconocimiento.

En 1986, grabó con Compay Segundo el álbum Chanchaneando, que puso de relieve la famosa canción original, Chan Chan (por Compay). Juntos recorrieron la República Dominicana y Guadelupe en 1989 y participaron en el Festival Smithsonian de American Folk en los EE.UU.

Proyecto Buena Vista Social Club: "Era la primavera de 1995 y durante uno de mis viajes regulares a Cuba en un viejo avión ruso ruidoso, coincidentemente tuve como compañero de viaje a Juan de Marcos González, ex director de la banda cubana Sierra Maestra. Durante el largo vuelo charlamos sobre todo, incluyendo el hecho de que regresaba a La Habana para organizar un proyecto que implicaba reunir músicos jubilados para organizar una nueva banda llamada Afro Cuban All Stars que recuerdo con tanta claridad ", dice Mo Fini, propietario / director de Tumi Music.

En 1996 Nick Gold, director del Circuito Mundial y Ry Cooder viajan a Cuba para grabar un CD con músicos de Malí y Cuba. Tras el éxito de la Buena Vista, todos los miembros de forma independiente se firmaron a diferentes sellos discográficos y produjeron muchas nuevas grabaciones.

Eliades Ochoa ha grabado ocho álbumes con el Cuarteto Patria, incluyendo Estoy Como Nunca (2002), Llega el Cuarteto Patria (2002), Homenaje al Cuarteto Patria (2000) nominada a un Grammy, Eliades Ochoa y El Cuarteto Patria (2000), Sublime Ilusión (1999) con Ry Cooder, David Helgado de 'Los Lobos' y armonista Charlie Musselwhite, también nominado para un Grammy, A Una Coqueta (1993), Se soltó el león (1996) y CubAfrica con Maun Dibango (1998).

En 2010 Eliades grabó un álbum con varios músicos cubanos y malienses Toumani Diabaté llamado AfroCubism, inspirándose en el primer álbum cubano-africano. En 2012 su álbum Un bolero para ti ganó el Grammy Latino al Mejor Álbum Tropical Del Año.

En octubre de 2015, Eliades Ochoa y Omara Portuondo fueron recibidos en la Casa Blanca por el presidente Barack Obama, y bajo el nombre del Buena Vista Social Club, ofrecieron un concierto como los últimos vocalistas que quedan de ese proyecto.

En este mismo año Eliades se unió a su hermana María para grabar el álbum Guajira mas Guajira, del cual ha expresado: «Este es el proyecto más importante de mi vida».

Asimismo se unió al trovador Alejandro Almenares, para grabar Dos Gigantes de la Música Cubana, también con el sello Tumi Music, que está previsto para ser lanzado a fines del 2016.

Alejandro Almenares was born on May 24, 1937, in the city of Santiago de Cuba into the humble family of Julia and Angel Sanchez Almenares. His father was the founder of "La Casa De Trova" alongside Virgil Palay and was one of the greatest troubadours in Cuba.

In an informal chat over lunch he tells me his life story with pride and joy. He jokes and laughs with everybody around him as they all want to have their photos taken with him. He then turns round to me and with sparkling eyes he tells me he'd rather his photo was taken with the beautiful waitress, and then continues:

"As a child, I grew up here in Santiago, playing in the streets of this beautiful city, I went to public school until the age of ten. I started to study at the music school till the age of 14 when I had to quit school in order to work and help my poor parents. I started playing music professionally around 1951, and continued to play after the revolution and ever since. Throughout my life I have played music with several bands in the music school including a group called "Los Taínos". My speciality has always been playing guitar in "Trios" formation (a band consisting of three musicians). I've played all the troubadour music that my father composed as well as my own compositions. I've played with and formed many bands with a lot of duets and trios."

In 1960 Almenares formed and directed "Trio oriente" and spent the next 14 years touring and playing with his band all over Cuba and beyond. He later became founder of "Las Guitarras Internacionales" together with Norberto Trujil. As he says: "I've been in so many bands that the number and names escape me ..."

In 1958 he fell in love with his girl friend and married her soon after. They have three children together. She inspired him so much that one of his very first songs "Mueve la cintura mulata" meaning "move your waist mulata" recorded with his band Quinteto Oriente", became very popular. The song was later used in a film starring Antonio Banderas called "Pecado Original". The same song was also interpreted by Omara Portuondo."

As a composer he has written over several hundred songs. Now 76 years old, he lives in Santiago de Cuba and still plays on a daily basis along with Eliades Ochoa and others in the Casa De Trova.

De todos los trovadores viejos, los que ya quedaron, yo creo que soy el «último mohicano» de esa generación ?por supuesto más vieja que yo?, de esa época pa'ca sólo quedo yo?

Portador de un auténtico y muy particular estilo de interpretación en la guitarra, el tres y el requinto, recuerda su niñez inmersa en un ambiente de cantadores de humilde condición social:

?Vi a todos los mejores trovadores de aquella época, como Sindo Garay, Salvador Adams, El Chino Cornelio, Augusto Castillo ?que era el director de la Ronda Lírica?, imagínate Pablito Armiñan, Daniel Castillo ? si me pongo a mencionar es una fuente inagotable. Toda esa gente amanecían en mi casa tomando sopa de pato; mi mamá cocinando y ellos cantando toda la madrugada, ya tú sabes...

Todos los trovadores de aquella época los conocí, y tuve la oportunidad de crecer en el seno trovadoresco y alimentarme de ello?Mi papá era un trovador de «alto calibre» ?porque lo decían ellos?, yo fui cogiendo recortico y recortico, y creciendo en ese mundo hasta que a los trece años ya era guitarrista profesional, parecía mentira?

Sencilla y virtuosa es su habilidad entre las cuerdas y los trastes, y ello le ha permitido acompañar a los más disímiles intérpretes de la canción. Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, Miguel de Gonzalo, Beatriz Márquez, José Tejedor y otros cantantes han sido secundados por este guitarrista de oficio y experimentado repertorista.

?Mi papá era un «puntal», y a él le debo mucho de lo que sé en la guitarra; también estudié un poquitín de trompeta y violín con Alcibíades Castillo en una escuela de música que había en la calle Moncada, y ya a los 14 años dejé todo eso porque me buscaron para ganar dinero? ¡que hacía falta!

Después con el tiempo fui director del Trío Oriente, fundador de las Guitarras Internacionales con Norberto Trujil?bueno, he estado en tantas cosas que ya se me escapan de la mente?

De su padre Ángel Almenares ?reconocido guitarrista y compositor? heredó un profundo amor por el género trovadoresco, y aprendió los artificios de la interpretación del instrumento, cualidades que han quedado plasmadas en disqueras como Tumi Music, Virgin Records, Erato, CoraSon, Egrem y otras, y le han permitido integrar diversas agrupaciones como el Cuarteto Patria, Septeto Típico Oriental, Cuarteto Oriente, Hermanas Ferrín y Los Guanches.

Su talento trasciende los límites del acompañamiento y su virtuosidad como instrumentista, pues como compositor posee un apreciable caudal de obras de diversos géneros dentro de la música trovadoresca, donde se destacan el son, el bolero y el bolero-son.

Entre los sones se pueden mencionar títulos como De lo que quiero saber, No critiques al nene, La chica de mi rosal, La finca de Vila, Esa guitarra que suena, El son de Vicentico, La charlatana y muchos otros. Sus sones recrean el diario acontecer vivido ?que dada su edad, es amplio? con un sentido jocoso, ocurrente, y una gracia que refleja la naturaleza del santiaguero y en especial de los trovadores.

En otro sentido, sus boleros abordan el tema de la mujer, sus cualidades, amores y desamores en sugerentes títulos: La niña que yo amé, Que siempre te he querido, Por despecho, El álbum de mi vida entre otros.

A su repertorio interpretativo Alejandro E. Almenares ha incorporado temas antológicos del catálogo de su padre como Cajón de muerto, Pepillito, Cosas de mi Cuba y muchos otros, perpetuando así su patrimonio musical.

«El Nene», como cariñosamente le llaman los amigos, es uno de los portadores actuales de la trova tradicional en Santiago de Cuba.
